Former Canadian Chief of Defence Staff Rick Hillier has been appointed as the National Bank of Canada's strategic defence adviser. He will assist the bank in supporting its defence and security clients, particularly those in advanced manufacturing and aerospace.

Hillier spent over 35 years with the Canadian Armed Forces and has a proven track record of leadership. In a media release announcing his appointment, he stated that Canada is entering a period of significant investment in the defence industry.

National Bank CEO Laurent Ferreira praised Hillier as one of Canada's most respected military leaders and strategic thinkers. Ferreira noted that Hillier's perspective will be invaluable in supporting clients and navigating an increasingly complex world.

In 2005, Hillier criticized government spending on defence during his time as head of the Canadian Armed Forces under Prime Minister Jean Chrétien. He argued that the forces were deprived of necessary funding for operations and training.
