HK Banks Soar on Hawkish Fed Signals, Rate Hike Expectations
Hong Kong bank stocks rallied on expectations of higher future borrowing costs, driven by the Federal Reserve's hawkish signals and intensifying rate hike probabilities. The surge was led by BOC Hong Kong (Holdings) Limited (02388.HK), which broke through the HK$50 barrier to hit a fresh historical record high of HK$50.65.
The market's interpretation of the Fed's latest stance, coupled with heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East driving up oil prices, reinforced the consensus for higher future borrowing costs. Investors bet on the profit windfall stemming from expanding net interest margins for banks, with BOCHK's gains exceeding 5% at one point.
JPMorgan Chase analysts pointed out that following the Federal Reserve's policy meeting, the forward yield curves for SOFR and HIBOR over the next 12 to 18 months are climbing significantly. They forecasted that BOCHK's net interest margin (NIM) will stabilize at around 1.6% for fiscal years 2026 and 2027.
The hot money driven by rate hike expectations wasn't confined to BOCHK, with other local bank stocks also seeing gains. Dah Sing Banking Group Limited (02356.HK) and The Bank of East Asia, Limited (00023.HK) both saw intraday gains approaching 7%, while HSBC Holdings plc (00005.HK) and Standard Chartered PLC (02888.HK) fell approximately 1.1% and 1.8%, respectively.
