Hochul Slams Tariffs, Citing Canadian Economy's Crucial Role in New York

New York Governor Kathy Hochul has spoken out against the recent tariffs imposed on Canada by the US, which put a 50% tax on various goods. In response, Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced hefty tariffs on $20 billion worth of American goods, including steel, dairy, and farm equipment.

Hochul emphasized the importance of the Canadian economy to New York's, citing its significant contributions to the state's automotive infrastructure, manufacturing, and farms. 'As someone who grew up in Buffalo, I have a deep relationship with Canadians,' she said. 'They fill our stands. They come to our county fairs. They go to the Bills games. They go to the Bisons games. They go to Sabers games along the northern border.'

Hochul stated that the trade war is hurting farmers in New York, particularly in the Western New York region. A White House spokesperson countered by saying Canada was offered a generous trade deal but rejected it to demand continued one-sided access to the US market.
