Honda's Record Profit Hides Bigger EV Pain
Honda's financials have been boosted by a weak Japanese yen, which has contributed to the company's record operating profit in the April-June quarter. However, this trend may also exacerbate the company's electric vehicle (EV) related losses later in the fiscal year.
Honda CFO Masao Kawaguchi noted that the ultraweak yen helped power the record operating profit, but it will also inflate the EV-related losses that the company books later in the fiscal year. This highlights a common challenge faced by Japanese automakers: while a weak yen can improve their exports and profitability, it can also increase the costs of importing raw materials and components.
Honda is not alone in facing this dilemma. Other Japanese automakers, such as Toyota and Nissan, have also been impacted by the fluctuations in the value of the yen. As the global automotive market continues to shift towards electrification, companies like Honda will need to carefully manage their EV-related costs and investments.
