HSBC Sees Dollar Strength Ahead Despite Initial Dip
HSBC strategists believe that despite the US Dollar's initial dip after the Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) meeting, it will ultimately grind higher due to resilient United States economic activity and widening interest rate differentials.
The FOMC kept the policy rate unchanged at 3.50-3.75% in July, but markets had priced a 35% chance of a 25bp hike, leading to immediate USD weakness as rate expectations were modestly repriced lower.
Federal Reserve Chair Warsh's comments during the press conference were interpreted by the market as dovish and USD-negative, avoiding explicit guidance on the likelihood of a near-term hike.
However, HSBC strategists argue that this meeting will not derail their constructive USD outlook, citing the Fed's willingness to hike alongside resilient economic activity, upside inflation risks, and widening interest rate differentials.
