Icelanders Weigh Freedom vs. EU Membership in Upcoming Referendum
Iceland is set to hold a referendum on August 29, where voters will decide whether to reopen accession negotiations with the European Union.
The debate over Europe has heated up in Iceland, with both sides framing their arguments around ideas of freedom, independence, and sovereignty.
Snaeros Sindradottir, executive director of the 'Yes' campaign, believes that joining the EU would increase security for the country. She notes that Iceland is already closely tied to Europe through its membership in the European Economic Area (EEA) and the Schengen zone.
Pawel Bartoszek, chairman of parliament's foreign affairs committee, also supports EU membership, citing the country's small and volatile currency as a reason to join the euro. He argues that this could lower borrowing costs for households and businesses.
