IFRC Launches Emergency Appeal for Flood-Hit Nepal
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has launched an emergency appeal for 25 million Swiss francs to support the Nepal Red Cross Society's response to devastating flash floods that struck northern Nepal. The floods, which occurred just a day after the IFRC released nearly 1 million CHF in emergency funding, have affected around 93,000 people and destroyed or severely damaged many homes.
According to the IFRC, the remoteness of the affected areas combined with damaged infrastructure is making it difficult to assess the full scale of the disaster and deliver assistance to those who need it most. The appeal will support the Nepal Red Cross response across shelter, cash assistance, health, household relief items, water, sanitation and hygiene, mental health and psychosocial support, and restoring family links.
IFRC Secretary General Jagan Chapagain said: “The IFRC Emergency appeal is a critical step to support the communities affected, focusing not only on the emergency response, but also on the mid and long-term recovery.”
