IMF Names Silvana Tenreyro Chief Economist Amid Global Economic Uncertainty

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has appointed Silvana Tenreyro as its new chief economist and head of research. She will replace Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas, who is returning to academia.

Tenreyro, a citizen of Argentina, Italy, and Britain, has a long history in economics. She was a professor at the London School of Economics and served as an external member of the Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee from 2017 to 2023.

IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva praised Tenreyro for her 'mix of intellectual leadership and policy experience.' She will take over on August 10, overseeing the preparation of the IMF's regular economic updates and serving as one of its principal voices on the global economic outlook.
