India Clears Trial of Polymer Banknotes in Rs10 and Rs20 Denominations
The Indian government has given the green light to introduce one billion pieces each of Rs10 and Rs20 polymer banknotes for field trials, according to a recent update from the Ministry of Finance. The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had proposed this plan as part of its efforts to shift towards more durable currency notes.
Polymer banknotes are considered significantly more resilient than conventional paper currency due to their resistance to moisture, dirt, and wear and tear. Several countries have already adopted polymer currency, including Australia, Canada, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand.
The RBI had informed the government that international studies suggest the lifespan of polymer banknotes is higher than that of paper banknotes. However, there are no plans to remove paper notes from circulation as the central bank aims to have both types parallel.
