India Should Fear Oil Prices Over Fed Rate Decisions
The recent decision by the US Federal Reserve to maintain its benchmark interest rate has led to market fluctuations, but experts suggest that oil prices may be a more significant concern for India. The Fed's decision was widely anticipated, and the markets responded with a decline in the Dow Jones Industrial Average by over 1,000 points.
This phenomenon warrants investigation as it is influenced by crude oil prices determined eight time zones away, which affect fuel costs and the government's fiscal capacity.
The elimination of guidance from Federal Reserve statements has increased uncertainty, transferring it to market perception where it manifests as concern. This approach was explored by Chairman Kevin Warsh who refrained from labeling the decision as a pause, instead describing it as 'a rigorous review of the economic situation'. Three regional presidents dissented in favor of an immediate interest rate hike, marking the first instance since 2016 of a unified multi-member dissent.
The fluctuations in Brent crude prices have been influenced by factors unrelated to actual extraction, such as geopolitical risks. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz led to a price surge, reaching $117 in April, an increase of nearly $50 despite no reduction in supply.
