India Stocks Plunge Amid Crude Oil Price Surge and Fed Fears
India's stock markets experienced a downturn on Monday, with both the Sensex and Nifty recording significant declines. Rising crude oil prices and concerns over potential interest rate hikes by the US Federal Reserve weighed heavily on investor sentiment.
The Nifty 50 index fell by 0.68% to 24,011.48, while the BSE Sensex decreased by 0.58% to 76,824.45. The broader market indices, including Nifty Smallcap and Midcap, were also impacted, showing steeper declines than their larger counterparts.
The downturn was attributed to several major players, with Infosys and Tata Steel contributing to the overall negative performance. However, HDFC Bank shares bucked the trend, increasing by 1.5% as its CEO, Sashidhar Jagdishan, decided not to seek reappointment at the end of his term in late October.
Nuvama Institutional Equities analysts commented that the CEO exit was a 'cleaner outcome', allowing HDFC Bank more time to select a successor.
