India's Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Japanese financial institutions to discuss increasing long-term capital flows into India. The meeting, held in Tokyo on August 25, brought together representatives from Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group (MUFG), Development Bank of Japan (DBJ), Mizuho, Morgan Stanley, Nomura, and Nippon Life.

Goyal highlighted the strength of India's economy, citing a growth rate of 7.7% last year despite global uncertainties. He also mentioned that India aims to become a $30 trillion economy by 2047. The minister emphasized opportunities for Japanese firms in sectors such as semiconductors, artificial intelligence, data centers, renewable energy, green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, and digital infrastructure.

The meeting explored ways to simplify profit repatriation processes, improve access to Indian capital markets, and ensure greater regulatory predictability for long-term investors. The participants also discussed the potential of GIFT City as a gateway for international capital into India.

Japanese institutions reiterated their confidence in India's long-term growth prospects but noted that currency movements and certain regulatory considerations can influence short-term investment decisions.
