Indian Exports Hold Firm Against Trump Tariffs
India's exports to the US have remained relatively stable despite President Trump's tariffs over the past year. According to trade ministry data, India's share of exports to the US accounted for around 20% of its total exports, a slight increase from 17.4% in 2022-23.
Despite efforts to diversify trade with other countries, the US remains an attractive market for Indian exporters due to its sheer scale and appetite for various goods, including electronics, engineering products, pharmaceuticals, gems, and jewelry, and textiles.
The government has sought to broaden the range of goods sold overseas by adding about 500 new product lines, mainly in electronics, engineering, and marine products. Free trade agreements with countries like the UK, EU, Oman, New Zealand, and Australia have also helped India diversify its exports.
However, experts warn that replacing the US market will take at least two to three years, underscoring the difficulty of shifting away from the world's largest economy.
