Indian Market Remains Flat as US Fed Decision Creates Uncertainty
The Indian stock market remained relatively flat on Thursday, July 30, 2026, as investors digested the US Federal Reserve's decision to hold interest rates steady despite hawkish comments. The presence of a three-member dissent in favor of a rate hike and Chair Kevin Warsh's commentary created uncertainty in global financial markets.
The Nifty IT index stood out, rising by 1.87% in early trade as major stocks within the sector saw notable gains. Infosys led the pack with a 2.55% increase, followed by Tech Mahindra at 1.68%, HCLTech at 1.37%, and TCS at 1.28%. This sector-specific strength is attributed to a rotation in global investor interest away from AI-focused semiconductor stocks and expectations that stable interest rates may encourage corporate technology spending.
The wider market, however, showed signs of pressure with eleven out of sixteen major sectoral indices trading lower. The Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 indices both recorded declines of approximately 0.3%, indicating resistance faced by smaller stocks. Rising Brent crude oil prices also remain a concern for the Indian economy due to its reliance on oil imports.
