Indian Rupee Surges to Two-Month High, Shifts Bitcoin Trade for Local Investors
The Indian rupee has reached a two-month high against the US dollar, hitting levels around 94.40 to 94.50 due to $136.4 billion in foreign currency inflows and a record short dollar position of about $137 billion held by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI).
This surge in the rupee's value is changing the dynamics for Indian investors looking at Bitcoin, as a stronger INR can reduce the rupee value of dollar-priced Bitcoin. If Bitcoin remains at the same US dollar price, its value in rupees falls as the Indian rupee strengthens against the dollar.
The RBI's net short dollar forward position hit a record high of $136.8B to $137B at the end of July 2026, primarily due to the special swap facility on FCNR(B) deposits in USD/INR. Banks raised about $127.2 billion through these non-resident deposits, part of total inflows near $136.4 billion by the end of August.
A stronger rupee may lower Bitcoin's value in rupees despite any gains in US dollars, while a weaker or more volatile rupee may drive Bitcoin higher or boost currency-driven gains. This shift in focus from dollar appreciation to outperforming the rupee is forcing Indian investors to reevaluate their approach to Bitcoin.
