India's Banknote Circulation Surpasses US and Euro Area
India's banknote circulation exceeds that of both the US and Euro area. According to RBI Deputy Governor Shirish Chandra Murmu, India has approximately 176 billion rupee banknotes in circulation, compared to around 56 billion US dollar bills and 30 billion euro banknotes at the end of last year.
The key reason behind this discrepancy lies in the widespread use of lower-denomination notes in India. This results in a higher number of physical notes needed for everyday transactions. Experts believe that India's large population, cash usage, and high volume of small-value transactions contribute to the higher note count.
RBI Deputy Governor Murmu stated, 'over the past few years, we have produced between 28 and 30 billion banknotes annually across six denominations, and disposed of roughly 21 billion pieces a year. As of today, 176 billion banknotes are in circulation in India.' The denomination mix in India, including the continued circulation of lower-value rupee notes such as Rs 10 and Rs 20, contributes to the overall number of banknotes in circulation.
