India's Migrant Population Fuels Remittance Earnings for Country

India's High Commissioner to Canada, Dinesh K. Patnaik, recently stated that Canada requires at least 100 million people and highlighted India as a potential source of immigrants to meet this demand.

Patnaik emphasized the mutually beneficial relationship between India and Canada, stating 'You have things which we need, we have things which you need.'

The High Commissioner's comments come as India continues to be a significant source of migrants for countries like Canada and Australia. In 2024, India received $125.6 billion in remittances from migrants living abroad, up from $57.1 billion in 2016.

Net migrant remittances accounted for around 3.2% of India's GDP in 2024, making it a crucial component of the country's economy. The money sent home by Indians working abroad supports millions of households and plays a meaningful role in the country's economy.

In many homes, remittances are not extra income but rather part of the monthly financial base. They help pay for essential expenses such as education, healthcare, housing, emergencies, and regular household expenses.
