Indonesia Interest Rates Set to Rise Again Amid Rupiah Volatility
Bank Indonesia is likely to continue raising interest rates to stabilize the Indonesian rupiah, according to a new analysis from United Overseas Bank (UOB). The central bank has been tightening monetary policy since late 2025, and UOB economists project another 25 basis point hike in the near term. This move aims to counteract the strong US dollar and global monetary policy divergence that have put downward pressure on the rupiah.
The rupiah has traded near its weakest levels in years, prompting Bank Indonesia to prioritize currency stability over growth support. Analysts argue that a stable currency is crucial for maintaining investor confidence and controlling imported inflation. A more aggressive tightening stance could also influence other regional central banks facing similar currency pressures.
