Indonesian Rupiah Surges Amid Fed Uncertainty and Domestic Economic Concerns
The Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) has gained ground against the US Dollar (USD), as uncertainty ahead of the Federal Reserve's policy decision weighs on the greenback. The USD/IDR pair had been trading around 18,120 during Asian hours on Wednesday, but has since lost value due to concerns about a potential interest rate hike.
While markets expect the Fed to leave rates unchanged, there is a notable 30.5% chance of an immediate rate increase, and a 76.6% probability of a rate hike in September. This suggests that global borrowing costs may remain elevated for longer.
The IDR has faced its own headwinds, however, following the surprise resignation of Bank Indonesia Governor Perry Warjiyo on Monday. His departure has raised concerns about the central bank's institutional independence, weighing heavily on Indonesian assets.
