Indonesia's Rupiah Slides as Markets Await Central Bank Policy Decision

The Indonesian rupiah has been under pressure in early trading on Tuesday, holding near its weakest levels since April 2020. The currency is struggling due to a combination of global and domestic factors, including a strong US dollar and narrowing trade surplus.

According to analysts, the US dollar's strength is driven by expectations that the Federal Reserve will keep interest rates higher for longer, drawing capital away from emerging-market currencies like Indonesia's rupiah. Domestically, falling commodity prices have reduced Indonesia's export earnings, putting additional pressure on the currency.

Bank Indonesia, the country's central bank, is expected to address these currency depreciation risks at its upcoming monetary policy meeting. While most economists expect Bank Indonesia to hold its benchmark interest rate at 6.00%, the tone of the policy statement will be crucial in determining the rupiah's trajectory.
