US inflation accelerated last month due to higher gas prices, which rose in response to renewed fighting in the Middle East. The Labor Department reported that the consumer price index increased by 3.4% year-over-year and 0.4% month-over-month.

The sharp rise in diesel prices has significant implications for transportation costs and businesses that rely on fuel. The national average diesel price surpassed $6 a gallon, up from $5.85 last week and $3.70 this time last year.

Wholesale inflation also picked up pace, rising 5.4% year-over-year, while existing home sales weakened to their slowest annual pace in over a year.

The Federal Reserve faces ongoing challenges in its efforts to combat inflation, which has been stubbornly elevated for more than five years. Rising prices have become a significant concern for consumers and businesses alike, particularly with midterm elections approaching.
