Inflation Adjustment Upends Domestic Box Office Records
The domestic box office has seen some record-breaking openings in recent years, but when adjusted for inflation, a different picture emerges. The graphic from visualcapitalist.com ranks the 25 biggest domestic opening weekends, with every debut converted to June 2026 dollars.
The current holder of the largest domestic opening weekend is Spider-Man: Brand New Day, which opened in July and raked in $360.1 million. However, when adjusted for inflation, the top spot belongs to another film, as raw dollar comparisons favor newer releases due to rising ticket prices over time.
The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' inflation adjustment method was used to convert past openings to June 2026 dollars, resulting in a different winner. The sentix Economic Sentiment Index for the eurozone also showed a recovery in August, with a 4.0-point rise to +0.9 points, returning to positive territory.
