Inflation and Consumer Confidence Updates Loom for Wall Street
Wall Street will receive two important updates next week on consumer confidence and inflation. The Conference Board's latest consumer confidence report is set to be released on Tuesday, with analysts expecting a decline in August after a drop in July.
Consumer confidence has been weak for most of the year due to stubbornly high inflation. The US war with Iran contributed to increased inflation by limiting oil supplies worldwide, leading to higher gasoline prices and squeezing household budgets. This, in turn, raised shipping costs for various products, including groceries and clothing.
The Federal Reserve's preferred measure of inflation, personal consumption expenditures (PCE), will be reported on Wednesday for July. Like the consumer price index, PCE has shown that the rate of inflation remains above 3%. The Fed aims to keep inflation at a target rate of 2%, but it has struggled to achieve this goal.
The Federal Reserve is expected to maintain its benchmark interest rate steady at its upcoming meeting in September. Despite these efforts, inflation continues to be a concern for the economy.
