Inflation Concerns Mount as Australia's Inflation Levels Hit 3.7%
Australia's inflation levels are higher than anticipated, according to Employment Minister Amanda Rishworth. The minister acknowledged that inflation has been running above target since the COVID-19 pandemic and is currently at 3.7% in the June quarter, according to analysts' expectations.
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) governor Michele Bullock expressed concern that bringing inflation under control could become more difficult due to global headwinds, including the oil price shock from the Middle East conflict.
Bullock stated that the longer inflation remains above target, the more concerned the RBA board becomes. The board is prepared to raise interest rates further to get inflation under control, which has led markets to pare back expectations for another rate hike in August to 20%.
Shadow Treasurer Tim Wilson criticized the government's handling of inflation, saying that underlying inflation remains a persistent problem driving up interest rate hikes.
