Inflation Data to Decide Fed Rate Hike Fate Next Week
Investors will scrutinize upcoming inflation data to gauge whether the US Federal Reserve hikes interest rates at its next meeting. The Fed's decision has been a topic of debate, with some officials signaling a rate increase could be necessary if inflation persists above target.
The September 11 Consumer Price Index (CPI) report is Wall Street's most closely watched inflation gauge. Economists expect a 0.4% monthly rise in August CPI and a 0.2% rise in the core measure, which excludes food and energy components.
Despite strong corporate profits and a nearly 13% gain for the S&P 500 this year, investors are bracing for potential volatility tied to the rate hike decision. 'CPI will certainly move the needle one way or the other,' said Sid Vaidya, chief investment strategist at TD Wealth.
With the second-quarter reporting season ending and bond market anxiety on the rise, investors are wary of factors clouding the outlook for equities.
