Inflation Eases, But US Costs Remain Elevated

US inflation cooled in July as gas prices fell, but costs remain elevated. Consumer prices rose 3.4% from a year ago, down slightly from June's 3.5%. The Labor Department reported this decline could ease pressure on the Federal Reserve to raise interest rates.

However, prices are still rising more quickly than average wages, highlighting the struggle Americans face with expensive groceries, gas, and healthcare. Core inflation, excluding food and energy categories, slipped to 2.5% in July from a year ago, down from 2.6% in June.

The modest decline suggests that underlying price pressures are cooling, but experts caution that oil prices remain elevated, and gas prices rose in late July and August. This could accelerate inflation next month.
