Inflation Fears Spark Savings Surge in Europe
Concerns about inflation have led to a surge in saving among Europeans, dampening economic recovery. The Financial Times reports that despite a slight increase in consumer spending, fears of price rises are causing people to put aside more money.
The UK's Office for National Statistics (ONS) data shows that the proportion of disposable income saved has risen from 4.6% in February to 5.1% in March. In contrast, the amount spent on goods and services declined by 0.7% over the same period.
According to a survey conducted by the European Central Bank (ECB), one-third of respondents cited inflation as their primary concern when making financial decisions. This sentiment is reflected in the rise of cash savings among Europeans, which has increased by 10% since February.
