Inflation Hits 2.9%, Threatening UK Economy and Autumn Budget

UK inflation rose to 2.9% in July, up from 2.6% in June, and is expected to continue increasing over the next few months. According to the Edinburgh Chamber of Commerce, this increase is largely due to higher energy costs caused by tensions in the Middle East, rather than a resurgence in domestic inflationary pressures.

The Bank of England expects inflation to average around 3.2% in the final quarter of this year, which could lead to further interest rate hikes if inflation continues to rise. The UK economy is already expected to slow down later this year, making restrictive monetary policy potentially counterproductive.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor face a challenging Autumn Budget as they must balance providing support for those struggling with cost-of-living issues while also curbing public sector expenses without contributing to inflation.
