Inflation Holds Firm Above Fed Target as Oil Prices Soar
The U.S. inflation rate has remained above the Federal Reserve's target of 2% for another month, with the PCE index rising 0.2% in July and core inflation at 3.3%. This persistent inflation is being driven by rising oil prices due to ongoing tensions between the U.S. and Iran, as well as potential trade wars.
The Fed's preferred gauge of inflation, the PCE index, was higher than expected, coming in at 0.2% for July, compared to a forecast of 0.1%. This follows a 3.7% year-over-year pace, which is unchanged from the previous month.
The core rate, which strips out energy costs, also rose 0.2% in July, with a year-over-year increase remaining at 3.3%. The Fed views this measure as the most accurate barometer of U.S. inflation trends.
