US inflation has remained steady at 3.4% over the last year, matching July's pace but exceeding economists' forecasts of 3.3%. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) for All Urban Consumers increased by 0.4% in August, following a 0.1% rise in July.

The energy index rose 2.1% over the month, largely due to a 3.9% increase in gasoline prices, which accounted for one-third of the monthly all items increase. The shelter index also rose 0.3%, after increasing 0.1% in July.

Meanwhile, the core inflation index, excluding food and energy, increased by 0.29% on the month, a rate slightly higher than expected. This has bolstered expectations that the Federal Reserve could raise interest rates next week to combat rising prices.

Notably, Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh indicated in a recent speech that reining in price pressures remains the central bank's primary focus, and that it will 'have work to do' if inflation doesn't fade. With inflation holding steady at 3.4%, the Federal Reserve's decision on interest rates is likely to be closely watched.
