Inflation Reports Set to Spark Rate Hike Debate in US Stocks

This week's inflation reports could significantly impact US stocks, particularly given the Federal Reserve's (Fed) hawkish stance. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) report on Wednesday at 8:30 AM EDT will be closely watched for signs of reaccelerating inflation within the Fed's preferred measurement.

The CPI report includes four key metrics: Headline CPI (YoY), Core CPI (YoY), Headline CPI (MoM), and Core CPI (MoM). A jump in the core MoM figure, which measures month-to-month momentum, from 0.0% to 0.3% or higher would signal a reacceleration of inflation.

The Producer Price Index (PPI) report on Thursday at 8:30 AM EDT will also be crucial. A core PPI print above 0.3% suggests that pipeline inflation pressures are building, making a hot CPI print next month more likely and giving hawks more ammunition for rate hikes.
