Inflation Set for Record-Breaking Surge as Energy Prices Soar
Brits are bracing for another rise in inflation as energy prices surge. The Consumer Prices Index (CPI) is forecasted to reach 2.9% in July, up from a 15-month low of 2.6% in June and the highest rate since March. Ofgem's energy price cap hike last month added £221 to the average gas and electricity bill, increasing it to £1,862 per year.
Investec economist Ellie Henderson warned that the energy price cap rise alone will add 0.5 percentage points to inflation for July. She stated, 'It was already clear at the publication of the June print that any easing in inflationary pressures as per the headline measure wouldn’t last for long.'
The Bank of England's target is 2%, and experts are concerned that inflation will continue to rise as energy costs increase further with the Iran war potentially sending prices even higher over winter months. Victoria Scholar, head of investment at Interactive Investor, predicted that the Bank of England may raise interest rates from 3.75% to 4% by the end of the year.
The hot weather is also causing crop shortages in the UK and Europe, which could drive up food prices. The Food and Drink Federation warned that 'fruit, vegetable and grain supply' are being hit, with producers expecting higher costs for supermarkets.
