Inflation Soars as Gas Prices Hit Record Highs
The latest consumer price index (CPI) report from the Labor Department shows that US inflation accelerated last month, driven by soaring gas prices and other costs. The CPI rose 3.4% in August compared to a year ago, matching July's increase but with a faster monthly rise of 0.4%, more than quadruple the 0.1% gain in July.
The Federal Reserve is under pressure to raise interest rates again next week, which could lead to higher mortgage and auto loan costs. However, some economists believe that the ongoing Middle East tensions are driving up fuel prices and may continue to do so.
Prices for various goods and services have been rising across the board, including airline tickets, hotel rooms, and car repairs. The nationwide average cost of a gallon of gas has hit a record high above $6, pushing up shipping costs for groceries and other essential items.
