US inflation accelerated in August as gas prices soared following renewed fighting in the Middle East. The consumer price index rose by 3.4% compared to last year, with a month-on-month increase of 0.4%, quadrupling July's rate.

The surge in energy costs has pushed up other expenses, including airline tickets, which rose 2.7% from July and are now 23% higher than last year. Car repair costs also increased by 1.1% in August, while hotel room prices climbed 2.4% month-over-month.

Despite some relief for consumers with unchanged apparel and grocery prices, the overall trend is concerning for Federal Reserve officials. With core prices rising 0.3% from July to August, economists are increasingly convinced that a rate hike at the next meeting on September 16 is likely.
