Inflation Updates Loom as PPI and CPI Reports Approach

The US economy will receive crucial updates on inflation this week, as two key reports are set to be released. On Thursday, the Producer Price Index (PPI) for August will provide insights into wholesale price changes before they reach consumers. The report is closely watched by Wall Street and the Federal Reserve, which aims to keep inflation within a 2% target.

The PPI measures prices for businesses, including costs for goods such as groceries, furniture, and clothing, as well as services like car maintenance and travel. Rising energy prices, fueled by the US-Iran war, have contributed to inflation rates above 3%. The Strait of Hormuz, through which about 20% of the world's oil supply flowed before the conflict, has seen shipping stifled, pushing up gasoline and goods costs.

The ongoing tariff disputes between the US and other countries also threaten to drive prices higher. In response, Wall Street expects the Federal Reserve to raise its benchmark interest rate at least once this year to combat inflation. The Fed's goal is to cool inflation down to a 2% rate.
