Interest Rate Hike Expectations Rise Amid Stagnant Inflation
The Kansas City Federal Reserve's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, hosted by Fed Chair Kevin Warsh, sparked interest rate expectations to rise. According to FedWatch, there's a 66% chance the Federal Open Market Committee will hike rates by a quarter-point at its upcoming September meeting.
This prediction is supported by inflation hawks like Dan North, senior economist at Allianz Trade, who said 'There's been no progress on inflation. We're right back to where we were before the war started.' He pointed out that the personal consumption expenditures price index is nowhere near the Fed's 2% target.
However, not everyone agrees with this assessment. Jay Hatfield, chief investment officer at Infrastructure Capital Advisors, argued that the government has been overestimating headline inflation and core measures will come down soon.
