Iran Conflict Sends Global Energy Prices Soaring
The ongoing conflict in Iran has led to a significant impact on global energy markets. The closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which accounts for roughly 15% of global oil supply, has resulted in higher energy prices and disrupted global trade.
Canadian energy producers are among the beneficiaries of this environment due to their stable jurisdiction, long-life production profiles, and low-decline production profiles. Companies such as Canadian Natural Resources, Tourmaline Oil, Methanex, Pembina Pipeline, Topaz Energy, and Keyera have generated significant free cash flow in this environment.
However, the share price performances of these companies have been strong but not as high as oil prices due to currency fluctuations. The Canadian dollar often strengthens against the U.S. dollar when oil prices spike, offsetting part of the benefit for Canadian producers.
