Iran Pushes De-Dollarisation at BRICS Amid Cross-Border Payment Reforms
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has called for increased use of national currencies in trade and reduced dependence on the US dollar, reviving the debate over a BRICS currency. This move comes as the BRICS nations discuss making cross-border payments faster, cheaper, and safer, as well as encouraging trade settlements in local currencies.
Pezeshkian has also emphasized the need for stronger BRICS financial cooperation and a greater role for the New Development Bank. Meanwhile, India has clarified that there is currently no proposal for a common BRICS currency, focusing instead on improving cross-border payments.
India and Iran are continuing their bilateral engagement, with New Delhi maintaining its position on dialogue and diplomacy amidst wider West Asia tensions.
