Iranian Rial Hits Record Low as Tensions with US Escalate
The Iranian rial has continued its downward spiral against foreign currencies, with the US dollar reaching an unprecedented high of 205,000 tomans on Tuesday. This surge is not limited to just the dollar; other major currencies like the British pound sterling and the euro have also seen significant increases, exceeding previously unimaginable price levels.
The rapid rise in exchange rates coincides with heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington, as well as the tightening of US sanctions. Analysts believe this is an early response to the anticipated decisions by the US administration regarding the imposition of a comprehensive package of economic sanctions aimed at cutting off Tehran's funding sources.
The Central Bank of Iran has acknowledged the difficult financial situation in the country, denying reports of an increase in foreign currency reserves and confirming that no new revenues have been received from oil sales or other sources. Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian emphasized the government's commitment to making every effort to combat inflation and improve living standards.
