Iran's Economy Collapses Under US Blockade
The economy of Iran is facing severe challenges due to the U.S. blockade, causing food prices to soar by 400 percent. Iranians are struggling to afford basic commodities, with some reporting that their grocery bills have tripled or quadrupled.
Nima, a 33-year-old cryptocurrency trader from western Iran, said he is in 'survival mode' and has to choose between essential items and everything else due to the high prices. He noted that even though his crypto trading gave him better foreign currency reserves than most Iranians, it's still not enough to make ends meet.
The annual rate of general inflation in Iran is over 80 percent, and unemployment reached a four-year high of 9.1 percent in June. The Iranian currency, the rial, has lost significant value against the U.S. dollar, making it difficult for many Iranians who prefer to do business using dollars.
Gholamreza Nouri-Ghezeljeh, Iran's agriculture minister, insisted that food security remains 'intact' despite the U.S. blockade. However, his claims of significant increases in agricultural output this year and the receipt of three million metric tons of imported food seem to contradict the accounts of Iranian civilians.
