Iran's Rial Hits Record Low as US Prepares to Announce New Sanctions

The Iranian rial has hit a record low against the US dollar as Washington prepares to announce new sanctions on Tehran. The currency dropped to 2.02 million rials per dollar, with the official Central Bank rate standing at around 1.5 million rials per dollar. However, the market rate is what most Iranians pay, making everyday items increasingly unaffordable.

Rice prices have surged by over 60% since the conflict began in February, while beef prices are more than 150% higher. The International Monetary Fund forecasts a GDP contraction of over 5%. Despite the economic pressure, Iran retains a strategic advantage through its control of the Strait of Hormuz, which has brought global trade to a near-halt.

The US and Israel have attacked Iranian targets in the strait, and Washington is now threatening even stronger sanctions. The Trump administration claims that these new measures will target countries that continue to do business with Iran. However, some experts argue that this could lead to unintended consequences and further destabilize the region.

Iran's Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Esmail Baghaei, warned that any escalation of the situation would have severe consequences, while Pakistan sent a high-level delegation to Tehran on Monday to discuss ending the war. Meanwhile, Oman is reportedly finalizing plans for joint management of the strait with Iran.
