Ireland's Mortgage Rates Edge Up Ahead of ECB Rate Hike
Average mortgage interest rates in Ireland rose marginally in June to 3.49%, according to new data from the Central Bank, although they remain below the euro zone average of 3.51%. This increase coincided with a 0.25 percentage point rise in the European Central Bank's main interest rate in June.
The ECB is expected to raise rates again next month, prompting concerns that higher mortgage bills will add significantly to the financial stress faced by Irish homeowners, particularly during the winter months when households rely more heavily on heating and lighting.
Trevor Grant, chairperson of Irish Mortgage Advisors, noted that while there was strong competition in the Irish mortgage market, which could help restrain further rate increases, now may be a good opportunity for customers to review their situation and seek out better rates.
