Japan Banks Resist Government Pressure for Defense Industry Investments
Japanese banks are facing pressure to provide investments and loans to the defense industry, but many remain cautious due to concerns over their corporate image and potential impact on overseas businesses. In July, Defense Minister Shinjiro Koizumi called for more support during a discussion session with financial officials.
The government has taken steps to facilitate cooperation by changing operational rules at the Development Bank of Japan, which will now allow investments in arms manufacturers without restrictions. However, commercial banks are still hesitant, citing concerns over their reputation and potential backlash from China.
While one megabank official stated that investments and loans would be decided on a case-by-case basis, it is unclear whether this approach will be sufficient to meet the government's demands. The defense industry has been seeking more funding support for emerging companies with dual-use technologies.
