Japan Budget Requests Soar Past 130 Trillion Yen
Japan's budget requests for fiscal year 2027 are expected to top 130 trillion yen ($819 billion), surpassing last year's record of 122 trillion yen. The government's promotion of growth investment is driving up spending, with Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi's administration not setting caps on ministries' requests for growth strategy spending.
The draft budget is expected to swell from the initial amount requested, as spending will not be finalized for many items until negotiations conclude. With tax revenue forecast at 83 trillion yen for fiscal year 2026, the increased spending will likely lead to new debt issuance, further deteriorating Japan's already strained fiscal health.
The Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry is seeking around 7.7 trillion yen, with 4.5 trillion yen planned for growth strategy investment in areas including artificial intelligence and semiconductors. The Defense Ministry is requesting a record 8.9 trillion yen to deploy interceptor drones and accelerate Japan's defense buildup.
