Japan Budget Requests Soar to Record High Amid Economic Concerns

Japan's budget requests for fiscal year 2027 are projected to reach a new high of approximately 143 trillion yen, or around $890 billion. This represents an increase from previous years and reflects the government's efforts to stimulate economic growth through increased spending.

The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare accounted for the largest share at a record 36.58 trillion yen, driven by rising welfare costs due to Japan's rapidly aging population. The Defense Ministry's request also reached a record high of 8.89 trillion yen as the country seeks to expand its defense capabilities in response to regional security threats.

Government debt-servicing costs are expected to rise significantly, reaching a record 36.6 trillion yen due to higher interest rates and bond redemptions. The government has urged ministries and agencies to request all necessary budgets without relying on supplementary budgets.
