Japan Caps Bond Issuance at 40 Trillion Yen for FY27
Japan's Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has signaled her government's intention to cap new Japanese government bond issuance at around 40 trillion yen ($251 billion) for fiscal year 2027. This target matches the level set for fiscal year 2025, but represents a significant increase from the current year's target of 32.7 trillion yen.
Takaichi pointed to the success of the 2025 plan as a template, where stronger-than-expected tax revenue helped absorb the cost of an extraordinary budget and allowed the government to keep fresh debt sales at about 40 trillion yen. The administration plans to continue this approach going forward, folding certain expenditures into the initial budget that were previously pushed into supplementary budgets.
The prime minister also mentioned her plan to use foreign exchange reserves to fund her signature policy initiative, a tax cut on food designed to cushion households from rising living costs. However, this move has raised concerns about the country's fiscal situation and its impact on the bond market.
