Japan Considers Blockchain-Based Settlement System for Stocks and Bonds
Japan is exploring the potential of blockchain technology to streamline its financial infrastructure. The country's Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan, and financial institutions are planning to establish a study group this summer to investigate the feasibility of using a blockchain-based system for settling stock and government bond transactions almost instantly.
The current settlement process in Japan takes two business days, known as T+2 settlement. However, with the proposed blockchain-based system, investors could receive their cash from completed trades almost immediately, reducing the waiting period significantly.
The plan is to determine the design of the blockchain network, assign responsibilities among government agencies and participating financial institutions, and establish a road map for building the infrastructure. If formally approved, operations could begin within several years, with the full system potentially running in the early 2030s.
