Japan Core Inflation Hits Four-Month High Amid Stagnant Target
The Bank of Japan's target for core inflation remains elusive as Japan's core consumer price index hit a four-month high in July, but still fell short of the central bank's goal.
In July 2026, the core CPI rose by 1.8% year-on-year, surpassing June's 1.6% increase and marking the highest rate since March this year.
However, despite this uptick in inflation, the figure remains below the Bank of Japan's target of 2%, making it the sixth consecutive month that the core CPI has not met this benchmark.
The government's fuel subsidies have helped cushion the impact of higher oil costs linked to the Middle East conflict, contributing to the slower-than-expected inflation rate.
Excluding fresh food and fuel prices, which are volatile and can skew the inflation data, the core CPI actually rose by 1.9% year-on-year in July, a significant increase from June's soft reading of 0.6%.
