Japan Inflation Hits 1.6%, Still Below BOJ Target Amid Global Price Pressures
Japan's core inflation accelerated in June to 1.6% year-over-year, but remained below the Bank of Japan's (BOJ) target of 2%. The core consumer price index (CPI), which excludes volatile fresh food prices, matched market expectations and increased from a 1.4% rise in May.
The inflation uptick was partly due to the base effect of last year's sharp fall in gasoline prices caused by government subsidies. Food inflation moderated due to slumping rice prices, while service inflation slowed to 1.2% from 1.4% in May despite steady gains in wages.
The Bank of Japan will scrutinize this data at its upcoming policy meeting next week, where it is expected to keep interest rates steady and issue fresh quarterly projections. Analysts expect consumer inflation to accelerate later this year as producer prices continue to rise due to the recent surge in fuel costs from the Middle East conflict and a weak yen.
