Japan Inflation Hits Fastest Pace Since January Amid BOJ Rate Hike Speculation
Japan's inflation has accelerated for a second consecutive month in July, reaching its fastest pace since January. The core consumer price index (CPI) rose 1.8% year-on-year, surpassing June's rate of 1.6%, and matching economists' expectations. This uptick is largely attributed to higher energy costs, snack foods, and dining-out prices.
Processed food prices have increased by a significant 3%, while rice prices have fallen nearly 12% after experiencing a sharp surge last year. Despite government measures such as gasoline tax cuts, which continue to moderate headline inflation, the data adds to the case for further policy normalization by the Bank of Japan (BOJ).
The BOJ's recent comments from Governor Kazuo Ueda have strengthened market expectations for a September rate hike. A weaker yen is also contributing to upside risks for inflation.
